Location: Percy Quin State Park Conference Center,
Fernwood, MS (Near McComb)
The Southwest Mississippi Rural Health Coalition, with
financial assistance from the Erin J. Johnson Foundation, the United
States Department of Health and Human Services and coalition members, will
conduct the third Youth Health Leadership Conference June
19-22, 2006. The camp will be conducted at Percy Quin State Park’s Beaver
Group Camp while the conference will be located at the park’s Conference
Center. The park is located in the Fernwood community near McComb,
Mississippi just off I-55. Although there is no charge for the camp,
selected participants must provide their own transportation to and from
the camp. Meals will be provided at the camp cafeteria or conference
center. Security and air-conditioned facilities are scheduled.
To address the impending shortage of health care
professionals and provide health leadership training, the coalition
invites high school youth meeting admission requirements to apply. The
purpose of the conference is to expose youth to the many careers in the
health profession while providing training in effective leadership. Health
professionals from hospitals, outpatient providers and other agencies will
present important information and insight. The conference will allow
participating youth access to university faculty members in the field of
health occupations. Scheduled to participate for the third consecutive
year are faculty members from Alcorn State University, Louisiana State
University, Mississippi State University, the University of Louisiana, and
the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
Current high school students in grades 10 and 11 with
at least a 2.5 GPA are eligible to apply. At least twenty cash stipends
and scholarships will be awarded based upon performance at the camp and
conference. Additionally, a Youth Ambassador will be appointed from each
county. Youth desiring to participate should request a Registration
